sometimes…

sometimes…

I am so dense.

Why?  Why would I spend an ENTIRE weekend making fun stuff for the holidays and not take one picture of one thing?  Because I am dense. That’s why.

I have one picture from my phone that I can share and it does not do the project justice at all.

I took a white flocked wreath from Michaels and added some pretty silver and pale pink flair…  I had a cheap silver holiday bird pick from Michaels that I added, as well as some sparkly ribbon.  Then I made a satin flower that is pink and silver as well.  Finally, I printed out a little saying and made a banner/flag with some fun garland and silvery goodness.  I will have to try and take a better photo of it.

I love this little wreath.  Think I might need to make a few more of these – I am definitely in the holiday mood!

70th birthday party

70th birthday party

Today is Matt’s mom’s 70th Birthday.  That, my friends, is a rather big deal.  So, in big deal fashion, we had an absolutely amazing party on Saturday night.

Now, his mom wanted to have just family and she basically wanted to plan the whole thing, right down to where dinner was, so that there were no surprises.  She hates surprises.  So, of course, I went 30 minutes early to decorate… Surprise!

She wanted to keep it simple, but we wanted to make sure we marked the occasion, at least a little bit, so I made some simple decorations for the tables with photos from throughout the years.  They were great conversation starters and fun for the family to look through.

Here is what I did:

I printed out about 20-25 different photos from scans (DON”T USE ORIGINALS FOR THIS!)  and hot glued them onto small dowels or put them in old floral frogs.  The sticks were then decorated with tulle and ribbon and other paper goodness.  The sticks were displayed on a little tray from the dollar store and in old jars from thrift stores that were decorated with tulle.

She loves the Chicago Cubs, so the color scheme was a subtle Cubby blue, white, and red.  I used some great papers that were less sporty to tie it all together.

I also made a “ticket” for dinner that was for dinner, peanuts, and Cracker Jacks.  And, then, each person got a little bag of peanuts and a box of Cracker Jacks both decorated with a little ribbon and tulle.  Very simple, but tied our whole baseball theme together with the photos.

Overall, I think it worked out really well.

She was definitely surprised, but in a good and a bit overwhelmed kind of way – not in a bad way.  I hope that she had as much fun as we did.

When dinner was over, all 18 of us headed back to my house where we had cupcakes, played board games, listened to Frank Sinatra and friends, and just laughed.  It was an extremely fun night for all and we partied until well past bed time.

Sometimes all we really need is a simple celebration to remind us how lucky we truly are and how tied we are to each other.

Happy Birthday Carolyn…  I hope it is a great one!

spark – project #1

spark – project #1

So, as promised, I will be recapping all of the great classes and tutorials and fun that I had by providing you with the where-to/how-to info you need to try and recreate some of the Sparkiness you might have missed.  I always want you to feel like you were part of my crafty adventures, too, so here is as much info as I can provide!

The first class I had was with the wonderfully talented and amazing Emily Falconbridge.  Last year she taught how to wet felt scarves.  That project was disasterous for me, but this year’s felting of a bar of soap went somewhat better.  At least it all made it home in one piece!

What I loved about this class was how relaxing it was, turning and turning the soap and felt over in my hands.  I enjoyed the amazing wool and colors Emily provided from Australia, and just the ease of mindlessly doing this while talking with friends.  We all agreed that these make great gifts – in fact, stores sell them for a pretty little penny, so making your own might be more enticing and appreciated.

We first wet felted the outside of the bar itself and then she quickly taught us to needle felt.  That is supposed to be a bird on the top – not sure it is great, but not too bad for my first try.  I definitely enjoyed the needle felting – that was fun.  We then needle felted our little birds, etc… to the top of the bar.

When you wash with it, it should keep shrinking as the bar shrinks.  The wool is naturally antimicrobial so it won’t get icky and is a great exfoliator, too.

Emily currently has an online version of her felting classes available for those who are interested over at Big Picture Scrapbooking. You will want to hurry, however, as registration closes on Nov. 2!!!  I am not sure it includes the soap project, but you will learn a lot – I am sure!

a super special kind of crafting

a super special kind of crafting

Recently I was asked to make something for an event for a Susan G. Komen fundraising event.  If you weren’t aware, Susan G. Komen for the Cure was started with a shoebox.  For the fundraiser, people were asked to create a box and make a donation with it for a silent auction.

A woman I work with is a survivor and she was asked to help with the event.  She ordered some fun Fiskars goodies to put in the box for the auction.  I was asked to create the box it would all go in.  Rarely do I feel pressure to create, but I wanted to give her something that she would be proud of and something that would hopefully raise a bit of money as well.

So… here is what I did.

First, she sent me a great sturdy box to use.

Then, I got to work.

I covered the entire thing with fabric.  The lid has several layers of batting under the fabric to help give it some softness and depth.

I handmade all of the flowers and added a feather and some bling to make the lid pop.  On the underneath portion of the lid, I added hot pink glitter that I decopauged so it doesn’t flake off, as well as some sequins and more bling.  The inside bottom is covered with this same fabric and also has several layers of batting under it for a nice, almost jewelry box feel.

Finally, I spray painted some wooden feet with a silver glitter spray paint and added them to the bottom.

It was a labor of love that I was proud to do.  I was thrilled and felt very blessed to have a chance to craft it forward for a good cause.  I was unable to attend the event itself, but I have heard that it was a huge success for that chapter.  It is one of the moments that I am so thankful that I can sometimes share my uniqueness in a tangible way to help others.

Anyway… just wanted to share the pics with you and I hope you can find a way to craft it forward, too.

an artsy fartsy kinda kids party – part 2

an artsy fartsy kinda kids party – part 2

Now, here is the basic set-up and run-down of the day:

First of all, what is a party without treats.  We went with cupcakes, orange slices, and Jacob’s favorite – Smarties – with lemonade to drink.  Look, they ate towards the end, so I figured I would send them home sugared up so I didn’t have to deal with it…  is that wrong?

Here is our t-shirt station.  They each got an adult small t-shirt to decorate.  I used simple fabric markers and then heat set them with a heat gun on the spot so that they were safe to send home to be washed.  We did this first, along with pictures, trading the kids between the two activities.  This way they had it as a smock for the later art events.

We also had a photo corner.  I used crate paper on a string, with a white plastic tablecloth behind it.  It was a fun and colorful way to take pics.  We had hats, leis, etc… on hand so that they could ham it up and have a blast taking their pics.  I later printed them out to use in their frames that they made.

Once pictures were done and t-shirts were made, the kids played in Jacob’s room while I started the printer and got water out for their painting.  A friend at Colorbok hooked me up with these great paintable items for the kids and they had fun painting away!

Once painting was done, they went outside to enjoy one of the last nice days of fall to play on the swingset for a bit.  Matt watched them while I quickly cleaned up the paints and got ready for frames.

Each child picked a frame and then had fuzzy balls, alphas, and other foam shapes that they could glue on and add to create their own frame.  Then I added in their pictures!

Once all of this was done and cleaned up, they played for a bit more, and then we did presents and cupcakes… it was fun.  At the end, we had planned to do sidewalk chalk, but the boys were too excited to play in the backyard again, so we ditched the chalk and played Star Wars and zombies instead.  Who am I to argue?  They had fun and that was all that mattered!

Here are a couple other pics just of the decor:

In the living room – Jacob sat here to open presents.

And our dining room chandy… I often dress this up for holidays.  We moved the table to the wall so if you don’t hang something from it and make it super noticable, people constantly walk into it becuase it hangs so low. I decorated it with homemade tissue paper balls, crate paper, and ribbon.  Super easy, but super bright and fun.

Anyway, that was our art party.  Pretty easy and inexpensive, with a blast!

halloween birdhouse hauntings…

halloween birdhouse hauntings…

I love birdhouses.  I have this thing about them.  I have started collecting them and then altering them to create art pieces.

Last year for Christmas, my parents got me this beautiful one from the antique store in town.  It has been sitting empty and lonely in my living room since then.  I ADORE it.

I just wanted to make sure that when the time and project were right, it would be something I could be proud of and okay with altering this pretty thing…  Earlier this week, I tackled it and created a happy nest for a naughty black crow for Halloween.

All I did was add some tulle here, some bling there, a spider here, and a skull there.  It was actually quite simple to do and it looks pretty cool in the house.  I just wish that the pictures did it justice, which they don’t.  You will, however, at least get the gist of it…

I got all of the extra special Halloween decor from my local Michael’s store… They had some great stuff this year!!!

Here is the finished project in my living room.  At 6:00am, there is no natural light, so I had to use the flash.  Not great, but I hope you can at least get the idea and the spirit of what I did!

an artsy fartsy kinda kid party… part 1

an artsy fartsy kinda kid party… part 1

Well.  I did it.  I hosted our first in-home birthday party.  We have always had kids parties, don’t get me wrong.  I have just NEVER had them inside our house.  That’s what the bowling alley and bouncy house places are for, right?

Jacob, however, wanted to host an art party, so that is what we did.  I am sharing a few pics today and some more coming up… they are a bit out of order, but just wanted to share all of the goodies we did.  The kids had a blast, Jacob was happy, and the house was still standing. That, in mind, is success.

I was lucky that a friend of mine sent me some awesome paintables from Colorbok for the kids to paint.  They loved it.  We made smock t-shirts (pics of that coming) for them to wear so that they wouldn’t mess up their clothes.  This was the messiest part, but totally worth it and they loved it!  Each child got to paint three little figurines.  There were animals, transportation pieces, robots, aliens, and all sorts of good stuff.  Jacob was thrilled because there was even an entire set of monkeys that needed a home.  As a huge fan of monkeys (hence last years Paul Frank birthday party), he was ecstatic!

Anyway, here are a few pics and I will share more about the actual plan of the party soon!

superhero costumes for summer fun

superhero costumes for summer fun

I seriously love finding something fun for the boys to make that they can use beyond coloring a picture or making a little project that stays on their desk.  It is truly enjoyable to watch them craft something and then put it to good use.  This little set of superhero costumes was just that…  A chance to craft and a chance for them to do some play afterwards as well.

I created this for the Fiskars website and the full directions can be found here.   This is one of those projects that occurred while playing with all of the goodies that I had for the GlueArts swap last week as well.

Here are some images for a little inspiration in case your kids are looking for something to do on a rainy day this summer…

Now, they are off to save the neighborhood from evil or at least look cute walking to Dairy Queen…

more GlueArts fun…

more GlueArts fun…

As a guest this week I was asked to make three projects. As a crafter who was on a roll, I made more!

I decided to make a quick, simple, and pretty bookmark. It only took a couple of minutes to do and I really love how it turned out.  I am a huge bookworm and often have something with me for swimming lessons, baseball warm-ups, etc… tucked in my bag somewhere.  This is a pretty way to add to the book I am reading and just makes it feel special.

Here’s what you will need:

Some stiff ribbon
Some decorative ribbon, buttons, bling, etc…
Old book page or decorative paper
Fiskars scissors
Fiskars squeeze punch
GlueArts glue gun

Step 1 – cut a base ribbon about 6-9 inches in length.
Step 2 – cut another piece of ribbon a bit smaller and layer it on top, adverting it with the glue gun.

Step 3 – punch a shape out of your paper – I used an old book page and the Seal of Approval squeeze punch. Adhere that with the glue gun as well.

Step 4 – add some buttons, bling, etc… Again using the glue gun.

Step 5 – find a favorite book to read and mark your spot!

This little project has a lot of potential. I hope you can take a few minutes to make a special bookmark for your next summer read…

And be sure to stop by GlueArts, Fiskars, and their Facebook pages tomorrow for another new project and some giveaways!
