project 365

project 365

Now, for those of  you that know me, you know that it is a big BIG HUGE deal for me to commit to something everyday for a year.  I decided that this year, however, I could commit to doing a picture a day – it can’t be that hard.  Thanks to my iPhone, it has been actually much easier than I thought it would be.

I started out January, just taking one picture a day and then joined Instagram and started to post them there.  As the month rolled on, I realized that some people have special challenges each day.  So for February, I will be adding that in as well.

So – Here are the challenges for February that I will be doing…

And, I started adding my pics to a Flikr account, which is now on my sidebar.  In addition, here is the slideshow that shows my first 32 days of the year…  not that it matters much to anyone but me, but I thought I would share.

If I can do this, trust me, anyone can!!!!

craftin’ by the creek

craftin’ by the creek

This past weekend I had a blast with a good group of girl friends “testing” a new craft lodge about 30 minutes from my house.  It was a total blast and the house was amazing.  They are right on a beautiful creek in Rockdale, WI.  They were looking for people they knew to give them some feedback so they could make a few adjustments prior to opening…  Here are some pics of the space – it was great!

I had a wonderful time crafting and cooking in the kitchen and just relaxing and laughing (a LOT) with my friends.

Here are two of the layouts that I completed from the weekend:

For being gone for a day and a half, I didn’t get much done, but I did have a blast and I got three more layouts done in addition to these, so it was successful from that respect.

Anyway, just wanted to share some pics of what I made and share the link for the Craftin’ by the Creek stuff in case anyone is looking for somewhere to craft!

spark – project #2

spark – project #2

As promised, I will continue to give you guys all of the low-down on the classes and how-to recreate stuff as much as possible – or at least hook you up with the links with those who can.

So…  Amy Tan.  aka Amy Tangerine.

I adore this girl.  She is about the cutest, nicest, sweetest, funniest, and honest people I know.  She is a riot in a tiny package and I am always smiling when I am with her.

She was also a Spark instructor this year and graciously taught us all her reverse applique technique.  Now, the boys each have had an Amy Tangerine original – which they adored and wore out.  Now I can attempt to recreate – but no one will ever out-do the original Amy…

So, in class, here is what I made:

And, since costumes are always on issue for school – you run the risk of them having a destroyed one for trick or treat – I decided to give it another go and made them each shirts for school today…

Now, if you want to learn to do this yourself, or purchase an Amy original,  just visit Amy’s blog for shopping and workshop info…  *** click here ***

Stay tuned, more Sparky follow-ups and giveaways are coming soon!!!!!!!!!

spark – project #1

So, as promised, I will be recapping all of the great classes and tutorials and fun that I had by providing you with the where-to/how-to info you need to try and recreate some of the Sparkiness you might have missed.  I always want you to feel like you were part of my crafty adventures, too, so here is as much info as I can provide!

The first class I had was with the wonderfully talented and amazing Emily Falconbridge.  Last year she taught how to wet felt scarves.  That project was disasterous for me, but this year’s felting of a bar of soap went somewhat better.  At least it all made it home in one piece!

What I loved about this class was how relaxing it was, turning and turning the soap and felt over in my hands.  I enjoyed the amazing wool and colors Emily provided from Australia, and just the ease of mindlessly doing this while talking with friends.  We all agreed that these make great gifts – in fact, stores sell them for a pretty little penny, so making your own might be more enticing and appreciated.

We first wet felted the outside of the bar itself and then she quickly taught us to needle felt.  That is supposed to be a bird on the top – not sure it is great, but not too bad for my first try.  I definitely enjoyed the needle felting – that was fun.  We then needle felted our little birds, etc… to the top of the bar.

When you wash with it, it should keep shrinking as the bar shrinks.  The wool is naturally antimicrobial so it won’t get icky and is a great exfoliator, too.

Emily currently has an online version of her felting classes available for those who are interested over at Big Picture Scrapbooking. You will want to hurry, however, as registration closes on Nov. 2!!!  I am not sure it includes the soap project, but you will learn a lot – I am sure!

people

people

There are people in our lives that leave a mark.  You meet them and you just know.  You know that your life will never quite be the same again.  You know that their impact will live in your soul forever.

There are a couple people from this weekend that have been that for me.  They are inspirational, motivational, supportive and uplifting.  As women, we need other women like that in our lives.  There is so much cattiness and ugliness amongst women that it is rare and special when people come into your life and make those types of changes to it.

You, dear Margie, have a piece of my heart.  From the first time I met you at Scrap St. Louis and we both melted into tears listening to Stacy Julian talk about creativity, I knew we would be friends.  As the years have passed, I have been blessed to have you in my life and I thank you.  Thank you for allowing me to call you friend.  Thank you for listening to me occasionally ramble and vent.  Thank you for being a light in the darkness and in my life.

Rhonna - Your art, your smile, and your drive never cease to amaze me.  We look ridiculous together, especially both in heels, and I love that.  You are an inspirational force to be reckonned with and I cherish the times we get to touch base.

Jaimie – you are a new friend, but a fast friend.  I laughed so hard and had so much fun hanging out this weekend.  Thank you and I can’t wait to see you again soon!!!

Now – go forth and light a spark – be a support, a friend, a light, a sister.  Let’s build each other up and not tear each other down.  Tell a friend in your life how much they mean to you.  Run. Go. Now.

spark the event #3 – and a giveaway…

spark the event #3 – and a giveaway…

I have to start this post with this disclaimer – I hate it when people blog about fabulous events that they got to go to and that I missed.  It makes me insane.  It truly does.  I hate seeing all of their beautiful creations that I missed out on and all of the bonding and fun that they had with their crafty friends.  I have to be honest because it is true.  So now I am going to do to you what I hate the most and tell you all about the amazing crafty adventure I have been on this weekend.

I was blessed to able to again attend Spark for the third year in a row.  It is my refresh, restart, and reenergizing that I need creatively.  It feeds and inspires me and helps me to be a better creative.  It also helps me to be a better me.  Sometimes we neglect to take care of ourselves busy working and taking care of others.  This was my respite.

Now, I will share some photos throughout the week about all of the adventures I had, but I can say that I learned a lot about a lot of things – felting (not good at it), She Art (LOVE!), stamp making (jury is still out), and so much more.

Now, while you couldn’t be there for it, I will send you the links to all of the teachers so that you can check them out and maybe take a class from them if something inspires or speaks to you.

And, since I got to go and you were at home, I feel like the least I can do is send you a bit of Spark-y goodness…

PaperCoterie was awesome and provided us with these amazing journals and keepsake boxes.  So, leave a comment about what you did that was creative or inspiring this weekend and I will draw a winner on Tuesday for some Sparky goodness!

an artsy fartsy kinda kids party – part 2

an artsy fartsy kinda kids party – part 2

Now, here is the basic set-up and run-down of the day:

First of all, what is a party without treats.  We went with cupcakes, orange slices, and Jacob’s favorite – Smarties – with lemonade to drink.  Look, they ate towards the end, so I figured I would send them home sugared up so I didn’t have to deal with it…  is that wrong?

Here is our t-shirt station.  They each got an adult small t-shirt to decorate.  I used simple fabric markers and then heat set them with a heat gun on the spot so that they were safe to send home to be washed.  We did this first, along with pictures, trading the kids between the two activities.  This way they had it as a smock for the later art events.

We also had a photo corner.  I used crate paper on a string, with a white plastic tablecloth behind it.  It was a fun and colorful way to take pics.  We had hats, leis, etc… on hand so that they could ham it up and have a blast taking their pics.  I later printed them out to use in their frames that they made.

Once pictures were done and t-shirts were made, the kids played in Jacob’s room while I started the printer and got water out for their painting.  A friend at Colorbok hooked me up with these great paintable items for the kids and they had fun painting away!

Once painting was done, they went outside to enjoy one of the last nice days of fall to play on the swingset for a bit.  Matt watched them while I quickly cleaned up the paints and got ready for frames.

Each child picked a frame and then had fuzzy balls, alphas, and other foam shapes that they could glue on and add to create their own frame.  Then I added in their pictures!

Once all of this was done and cleaned up, they played for a bit more, and then we did presents and cupcakes… it was fun.  At the end, we had planned to do sidewalk chalk, but the boys were too excited to play in the backyard again, so we ditched the chalk and played Star Wars and zombies instead.  Who am I to argue?  They had fun and that was all that mattered!

Here are a couple other pics just of the decor:

In the living room – Jacob sat here to open presents.

And our dining room chandy… I often dress this up for holidays.  We moved the table to the wall so if you don’t hang something from it and make it super noticable, people constantly walk into it becuase it hangs so low. I decorated it with homemade tissue paper balls, crate paper, and ribbon.  Super easy, but super bright and fun.

Anyway, that was our art party.  Pretty easy and inexpensive, with a blast!

an artsy fartsy kinda kid party… part 1

Well.  I did it.  I hosted our first in-home birthday party.  We have always had kids parties, don’t get me wrong.  I have just NEVER had them inside our house.  That’s what the bowling alley and bouncy house places are for, right?

Jacob, however, wanted to host an art party, so that is what we did.  I am sharing a few pics today and some more coming up… they are a bit out of order, but just wanted to share all of the goodies we did.  The kids had a blast, Jacob was happy, and the house was still standing. That, in mind, is success.

I was lucky that a friend of mine sent me some awesome paintables from Colorbok for the kids to paint.  They loved it.  We made smock t-shirts (pics of that coming) for them to wear so that they wouldn’t mess up their clothes.  This was the messiest part, but totally worth it and they loved it!  Each child got to paint three little figurines.  There were animals, transportation pieces, robots, aliens, and all sorts of good stuff.  Jacob was thrilled because there was even an entire set of monkeys that needed a home.  As a huge fan of monkeys (hence last years Paul Frank birthday party), he was ecstatic!

Anyway, here are a few pics and I will share more about the actual plan of the party soon!
